ปัญหาหลักของคนทำ Web Site ขนาดใหญ่คือ จะทำอย่างไรให้ระบบสามารถรองรับการใช้งานของ Users จำนวนมาก ๆ ได้ ??
เทคนิคหนึ่งที่มีการใช้อย่างแพร่หลาย คือ การทำ Load Balance
Load Balance เป็นเทคนิคที่ช่วยแบ่งงานที่เข้ามาจาก User ให้กระจายไปในกลุ่มของ Server ที่เตรียมไว้การทำงานของ Load Balancer คือ1. เซิร์ฟเวอร์ฟาร์ม2. ในเซิร์ฟเวอร์ 1 เครื่อง อาจมีมากกว่า 1 บริการ3. กระบวนการตรวจสอบว่า บริการต่าง ๆ ยังทำงานอยู่หรือไม่4. สามารถใช้งานกับเซิร์ฟเวรอ์ที่หลากหลาย5. สามารถกระจายงานให้กับเซิร์ฟเวอร์ต่าง ๆ ได้อย่างเหมาะสม6. มีความสามารถทำ Application Level Health Check ได้ ซึ่งเป็นกระบวนการตรวจสอบว่าบริการต่าง ๆ ยังสามารถให้บริการได้อย่างเหมาะสมหรือไม่ หากตรวจสอบแล้วพบว่า บริการของเซิร์ฟเวอร์ตัวใดไม่สามารถให้บริการได้ จะไม่ส่งงานไปยังบริการของเซิร์ฟเวอร์นั้น ๆ7. สามารถ ทำ Content Management ได้ เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงปัญหาข้อมูลซ้ำซ้อน ยากแก่การอัพเดทข้อมูลได้เหมือนกันในทุก ๆ ระบบ ทำให้มีระบบที่จะเกิดข้อมูลซ้ำซ้อนกันน้อยที่สุด มีการแบ่งการเก็บข้อมูลเป็นไดเร็คทรอรี่ แล้วกำหนดเซิร์ฟเวอร์แต่ละตัวว่าต้อง รับผิดชอบการเก็บข้อมูลไดเร็คทรอรี่ใดบ้าง Load Balancer จะทำการ Redirect ข้อมูลให้ตรงกับ URL ที่ร้องขอมา8. สามารถทำ Session Persistence ได้ เป็นการที่เซิร์ฟเวอร์ที่รับบริการใดๆ ต้องดำเนินการต่อจนจบ Session มีวิธีในการดำเนินการ คือ Cookie Bases Switching, Cookie Based Hashing, SSL ID Switching9. เป็น High Availability Load Balance เป็นการออกแบบสามารถติดตั้งระบบ Load Balance ในสองรูปแบบ คือ Active-Active สำหรับเพิ่มความสามารถในการให้บริการ (Scalability) Active-Standby สำหรับเพิ่มความพร้อมในการใช้งาน (Fault Tolerant)10. ทำ Global Server Load Balance ได้ เป็นการประยุกต์การทำ Load Balance ให้สามารถรองรับการให้บริการจากทั่วโลกได้ ส่วนใหญ่เป็นการให้บริการเว็บไซต์ มีเทคนิคที่ใช้คือ DNS, HTTP Redirect และการใช้ Load Balance
ในปัจจุบันมี Solution Application Delivery สำหรับ องค์กรที่มี Application ขนาดใหญ่จะมี web คล้ายกับรูปแบบการนำส่ง Server Load Balancer ได้ถูกพัฒนาขึ้นมาเพื่อให้ web site เหล่านั้นมีการทำงานได้อย่างต่อเนื่องและมีสามารถรองรับการให้บริการได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ โดยมี Application Delivery Controller เป็นตัวช่วยบริหารจัดการ ซึ่งเป็นระบบ Internet-based มีความน่าเชื่อถือด้านประสิทธิภาพและความปลอดภัย
